MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced on Monday that Argentine midfielder
Andrés Romero was awarded the Giuseppe Saputo Trophy as Impact MVP for the 2014 season.
In his second season in MLS, Romero has set several personal bests, finishing as the third leading scorer on the team with six goals, including a game-winner, in addition to three assists in 29 games played for 2,185 minutes, including 25 starts. He reached the 2,000 minutes played plateau in a season for the first time in his career in MLS.
He also finished as the league’s best in shots on goal percentage with a 64.5% (20 shots on frame in 31 attempts).
Romero helped the team win a second consecutive Canadian championship, playing three games, including two as a starter. He then tallied one goal and one assist in four games, all starts, during the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Selected twice as the Vidéotron player of the game this season, Romero played a stretch of three consecutive games with a goal, from May 24 to June 11, 2014.
Before his arrival with the Impact, he had previously played in Brazil’s first and second division, as well as in the Argentine first division with Argentinos Junior. He also played five games with the Argentine national team less than 20 years, including two starts in the U20 Sudamericano Championships in 2009.
The MVP award was selected by the club’s technical staff.
