MONTREAL – CF Montréal announced on Sunday that Icelandic centre-back Róbert Thorkelsson signed a two-year and a half contract, until the end of 2023, with two option years in 2024 and 2025. The deal will be confirmed upon reception of his international transfer certificate and medical examination.
“When Luis Binks left for Bologna, we had to add a player to the roster and Róbert has a similar profile,” said CF Montréal sporting director Olivier Renard. “We are happy with the deal we have with him. Despite his young age, he has first-team experience in Iceland, in Europa League and with the national team. We welcome him to the Club.”
The 19-year-old defender has been with Breidablik Kopavogur since 2020, in Iceland’s first division, where he played 26 games and scored two goals, while also starting a UEFA Europa League game against Rosenborg on August 27, 2020. Before, he played 26 games and scored five goals with UMF Afturelding in Iceland’s second division.
At the international level, Thorkelsson has represented Iceland’s youth teams since 2018, including two games in the UEFA U21 Euro qualifying tournament in 2020 and in the UEFA U21 Euro tournament in 2021.
