MONTREAL – CF Montréal announced Tuesday that midfielder Djordje Mihailovic was selected as the Club’s Most Valuable Player, while Rudy Camacho took home the Defensive Player of the Year Award. The winners were chosen via a vote among season ticket holders.
Mihailovic and Camacho collected 80% and 58% of the Member votes respectively. The vote was held from November 16 to November 20.
The Giuseppe-Saputo trophy, awarded to the MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year trophy, were presented by two Members at Centre Nutrilait in the presence of head coach Wilfried Nancy and Sporting Director Olivier Renard.
Arriving at the Club on December 17 following four seasons with the Chicago Fire, Mihailovic enjoyed a career-best MLS season. In 2021, he established himself as CF Montréal’s creative centrepiece, tallying 16 assists, two short of MLS assist leader Carles Gil (18) of the New England Revolution. In doing so, Mihailovic surpassed the record of 13 assists previously held by Nacho Piatti in 2018. With his 16 assists, Mihailovic already sits sixth all-time among the Club’s best passers in MLS. The 23-year-old American also became the second player in Club history to play all MLS games this season. In 32 starts, he led the team with 2,805 minutes played. He also collected four goals and took 118 corners, setting another MLS Club record.
Arriving in Montreal in 2018, Camacho completed a fourth season with CF Montréal in 2021. In 31 games, all as a starter, the centre-back scored three times in 2,746 minutes played. In addition to leading all defenders in starts this season, the France native notably scored the game-winner on November 3 in a 2-0 win against the Houston Dynamo, thus tying a Club record for goals scored by a defender in a single season.
Midfielder Victor Wanyama and forward Romell Quioto were also in contention for the MVP Award, while Kamal Miller and Joel Waterman were the other nominees for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.
