TORONTO – FC Montreal lost 3-2 in Toronto Saturday afternoon. Reshon Phillip scored twice for the Reds in the win.
Right from the start, Toronto FC II scored in its own net, before any Montreal player was able to touch the ball. After passing the ball around, Wesley Charpie sent a high ball back to his goalkeeper, which sailed over his head.
Toronto immediately got a goal back in the 4th minute. After a through pass, Reshon Phillip, alone in the box, scored with a low shot.
Defender Skylar Thomas helped his team take the lead in the 28th minute, scoring on a header after a Reds’ corner kick.
Reshon Phillip scored his second goal in the 50th minute, on a Montreal clearance from a corner kick, when he took a shot from 20 yards out that went top left corner.
The Bleu-blanc-noir played its best soccer of the game in the second half. On a through pass from Alessandro Riggi in the 88th minute, Frédéric Lajoie-Gravelle dribbled past the keeper and pushed the ball behind the goal line.
Despite many attacking chances towards the end of the game, Toronto FC II held on for the 3-2 victory.
“Defensively, we were not consistent on second balls. We know it’s something we have to work on,” said goalkeeper Yann-Alexandre Fillion. “We didn’t have enough desire in the first half.”
“It was 50 minutes with no play, with 40 minutes of play,” said head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. “We had good chances in the second part of the game, but success won’t come if we don’t play well from the start.”
The next FC Montreal game will be played on Wednesday, September 9, at 7:30pm, against the New York Red Bulls II, at Stade Saputo.
