The refereeing in the Montreal Impact’s most recent game, last Saturday at Red Bull Arena, has been a big talking point.
An incident that occurred in the 43rd minute drew much attention. Sent through to the penalty area, forward Didier Drogba got Aurélien Collin’s cleats on his foot, which should have meant penalty kick for the Impact and, quite possibly, a second caution for Collin.
Asked about this by the Montreal media on Tuesday morning, Impact head coach Mauro Biello mostly wished to underline how Drogba, despite his imposing stature, deserves to get decisions called his way.
“The fact that he’s 6-foot-2 doesn’t mean that he cannot get calls,” said Biello. “Yes, there’s a physical aspect to the way that he plays, but a foul is a foul, and that was a foul on him there. There’s no touch of the ball. It’s something that has to improve, and we’re hopeful that it will be addressed.”
This being said, the Montreal head coach refuses to use refereeing as an excuse and led a busy training session on Tuesday ahead of his group’s next task, this Saturday at 7:30pm at Stade Saputo against the Chicago Fire (TICKETS).
