MONTRÉAL – The Montreal Impact announced on Friday that the club has come to terms with French goalkeeper Clément Diop on a new one-season contract, with an option for 2021.
“We are glad that Clément extends his contract with us and we are happy to count on him for the next season,” said the Impact Sporting Director Olivier Renard. “He’s a goalkeeper that showed his skills at the end of last season in cup and regular season games.”
Diop, 26, has spent the last two MLS seasons with the Impact, helping the club win the 2019 Canadian Championship on September 25, against Toronto FC at BMO Field. He started four games during the tournament, allowing three goals while recording two shutouts. He also started two MLS regular season games in 2019.
He was selected by the Impact in the 2017 MLS Waiver Draft, after two seasons with the LA Galaxy.
Born in Paris from Senegalese parents, he was part of the academy of French club Amiens SC from 2009 to 2011 and was a backup goalkeeper for the first team in Ligue 2 during the 2011-2012 season.
At the international level, Diop has appeared in one game with the Senegal national team, making his senior debut in a friendly against Uganda on June 5, 2017. He was also called up for several 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying games. He has previously represented France at the U19 level.
He holds his American green card and will not count as an international player.
