Impact’s CONCACAF Champions League group now set

The Montreal Impact Is headed to the CONCACAF Champions League, and following the draw that was held on June 3 in Miami, it was announced that one opponent of Canada’s only representative would be MLS cousins, the San Jose Earthquakes.

The third team in the Impact’s group was a mystery as “Guatemala 2” was the name of the club selected to round out group 5. The reason was that the second representative from Guatemala had yet to be determined with its Clausura (closing season) still being played.

Guatemala 2 has been identified as Heredia, finalists in the Clausura championship. Although the true winner of the closing season has yet to be identified, the other title contender, Communicaciones, has already qualified for the Champions League tournament as “Guatemala 1”.

Heredia Jaguares de Peten was founded as Deportivo Heredia in 1958. The club has been based in San Jose, Peten since summer 2008 after the team moved from Morales due to poor attendance, changing its name. Made up of mostly Guatemalan players, Heredia does count a couple of Colombians, an Argentinian and a Uruguayan amongst its ranks.
