With the unpredictability of drafting amateur players, the Montreal Impact has a pretty good track record when they go up to the podium on draft day.
In 2012, with the number one pick of the draft, the bleu-blanc-noir turned their top spot choice of Andrew Wenger into Jack McInerney in 2014, a striker who’s already scored over 30 goals before turning 22 last August.
With its second round pick in its expansion year, the Impact brought in midfielder Calum Mallace, who following a loan stint in 2013 with Minnesota United FC of USL Pro, broke through last season, playing 23 games and scoring a goal and three assists.
In 2013, the Impact made Blake Smith its first pick, eighth overall. The dynamic midfielder scored two goals in his rookie season, making 16 appearances, before joining Indy Eleven on loan last year for developmental purposes, earning valuable playing time and scoring twice in 19 appearances with the NASL club.
At the 2014 SuperDraft, IMFC moved its 10th pick, an international spot and some allocation money for FC Dallas’ fifth pick in order to secure the rights to defender Eric Miller. The former U.S. U20 and U23 international made 21 appearances as a rookie last season, 18 starts, and looked to grow in comfort and confidence as the season progressed. He probably would have seen even more action had it not been for a midseason injury that kept him sidelined for a few weeks.
So with the 2015 MLS SuperDraft set for this Thursday, what do you think the Impact will do with its third overall selection?
