Impact midfielder Maxim Tissot is part of the 23-man roster named by the Canadian men’s national team for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will be played in July in the U.S. and Canada.
Canada will assemble on June 28 in Santa Barbara, before opening the Gold Cup on Wednesday, July 8, against El Salvador at StubHub Center in Carson, California, USA. Then, they will head to Houston to take on Jamaica on July 11, before coming to Toronto to take on Costa Rica at BMO Field on July 14.
“I am very proud and honoured to represent my country in a competition as important as the Gold Cup,” said Tissot. “Several top players have played in this tournament and I hope to help Canada win its second title.”
Tissot took part in both the home and away games versus Dominica on June 11 in Roseau and June 16 in Toronto, in the second round of qualification games for the 2018 World Cup. Canada won the series 6-0 to reach the third round.
He’s played six games, including three starts, with the Canadian national team, making his debut on January 16, 2015, against Iceland. He earned his first invitation in November 2014, in a friendly against Panama, but did not play.
The 2015 Gold Cup champion will face the U.S., champions of the 2013 edition, in a playoff game to determine the CONCACAF representative at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.
Impact team captain Patrice Bernier (2005, 2007 & 2009), technical director Adam Braz (2005 & 2007) and assistant coach Enzo Concina (1993) have represented Canada in previous editions of the Gold Cup, while head coach Frank Klopas (1996), forwards Kenny Cooper (2009) and Jack McInerney (2013), as well as midfielder Justin Mapp (2007) played for the United States.
The Gold Cup is a tournament played every two years between members of CONCACAF to determine the regional champions, similarly to the Euro Cup in Europe and the Copa America in South America. Canada won the championship in 2000.
