It’s well known throughout the soccer playing world that goalkeepers are a “special breed,” and there is none more special than the Impact’s Troy Perkins this season…at least when you examine his play. He deserves serious consideration as the backstop for the MLS All-star game.
Numbers don't lie
If you take a look at his stats this season, that alone should get him consideration: nine wins in 15 games (1st in MLS), four shutouts, 48 saves (4th) and a save percentage of 75 (ranked 5th).
Perkins = Clutch
Almost half of the Impact’s matches this season were one-goal games and Perkins’ record over that span is 6-2. That means six of the Impact’s nine wins were won by a single goal and on a number of occasions, Perkins came up with a clutch save in the second half that helped preserve his team’s win, including this gem in the second frame versus SKC to earn the 2-1 road victory.
Hair-ial battle
With AS Roma as the MLS All-Star opponents, and US international Michael Bradley on its roster, North American soccer fans could be privy to one of the greatest battles of US players with a shaved scalp - a real head-to-head battle if there ever was one, that is, unless Perkins decides to grow out his hair again!
