MLS SuperDraft: Frank Klopas’ experience could prove invaluable

2014 SuperDraft Frank Klopas

The Montreal Impact will take on Thursday’s SuperDraft with an extra weapon in its arsenal – a head coach who’s been there and done that.

The club’s new bench boss and director of player personnel, Frank Klopas, made up part of the Chicago Fire staff that drafted 2012 Rookie of the Year Austin Berry, frequent US national team invitee in goalkeeper Sean Johnson and MLS regular defender Jalil Anibaba.

That experience will be a great asset as the Impact has five selections in the 2014 SuperDraft: the 10th, 29th, 37th, 48th and 67th overall.

"It’s very positive that Frank's finger is on the pulse," said technical director Matt Jordan. "He has a very good idea of the landscape of the college game, That’s definitely a benefit to us as a technical staff and as a club."

Such insight could prove valuable for Montreal as they, like most MLS clubs, approach this opportunity to add "salary cap-friendly players", as Jordan puts it.

"There are a lot of good players and we feel that we’ve done a good job of doing all the necessary homework before we came here to have a very good feel for these players," he said.
