With a playoff spot locked up following last weekend’s road win over the New England Revolution, the Bleu-blanc-noir will look to climb the standings and try to secure a home date in the Knockout Round of the MLS postseason on Decision Day.
And destiny is in the Impact’s hands as a win would clinch the third seed in the Eastern Conference. Here’s how.
Currently, IMFC is in fifth spot in the East with 48 points. Toronto FC is one point ahead of Montreal at 49, while Columbus occupies the third seed at 50 and D.C. United is holding second place with 51 points, while all teams will face one of the other three teams.
No matter the result between D.C. United and Columbus, the Impact would climb over Toronto FC and into third spot with a victory and 51 points. A D.C. United win or draw would secure second for the Red and Black, leaving Columbus at 50 or 51 pts respectively, with the Impact holding the tiebreaker in the case of a draw (goal differential).
If Columbus wins, then IMFC would finish in a 51-point tie with D.C., but will again hold the goal differential tiebreaker.
An interesting side note is that with a win and a Vancouver loss against Houston, the Impact would finish the season as the best Canadian team in MLS and would earn top seed in the Amway Canadian Championship next year.
So destiny lies in the Impact’s hands as winning its final game of the season at Stade Saputo Sunday at 5pm (RDS, TSN, 98,5fm, TSN Radio 690) against Toronto FC and Italian star Giovinco, who will win the 2015 Golden Boot, would secure the team’s very first playoff home date in MLS and much more.
