Four games remaining until the MLS Cup playoffs

CF Montréal clinched a spot in the MLS Cup payoffs in dramatic fashion last Friday in front of a sold-out crowd, scoring two goals in the game’s dying minutes to erase a two-goal deficit. With the game ending in a 2-2 draw, Montreal was able to confirm its spot in the postseason with four games to go in the regular season.
Head coach Wilfried Nancy’s men will now be looking to secure a spot in the top four of the Eastern Conference, allowing them to host a playoff game at Stade Saputo. Montreal is currently ranked second in the East with 53 points, although the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC are close behind them, with 50 and 46 points respectively.
“We’re trying not to focus too much on the standings,” said defender Alistair Johnston. “We know that if we keep doing our job, home field advantage will come with that. For us, it’s about putting up good performances, and turning those ties at home into wins. We want to build on that crowd and atmosphere that was there on Friday and bring it into the playoffs.”
They now get set to take on a Chicago Fire team that is just barely hanging on in the race for a playoff spot. Currently ranked 12th in the East, Chicago was able to keep their playoff hopes barely alive by dismantling Inter Miami 3-1 over the weekend. There are still five teams and six points standing between them and the final playoff spot, with four games remaining.
Montreal took the first meeting between the two sides just two weeks ago at Soldier Field, shutting out head coach Ezra Hendrickson’s men 2-0.
“We know Chicago will be a different game,” said head coach Wilfried Nancy. “When we played there, we did some good things. We were down a man in the second, but we managed to hold on. Today, they’re fighting for a playoff spot. They’re going to give it their all. The intensity has really increased in the last few games. Tomorrow, I expect that as well, a game with a lot of intensity.”

CF Montréal will be on the road this Saturday at 7:30pm to take on the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium, the team’s last game before the international break. They’ll be back in action two weeks later to for their last home game of the MLS regular season on Saturday, October 1, at 7:30pm, against D.C. United. Tickets for that game are available here.
