Pregame – CF Montréal v New York Red Bulls

Team looking to go unbeaten in nine straight games

CF Montréal will be back home to take on the New York Red Bulls this Wednesday, August 31, at 7:30pm at Stade Saputo (TVA Sports, TSN, TSN 690, BPM Sports). Tickets for the game are still available here.

It’s a short break from Montreal, who was on the road to take on the Chicago Fire last Saturday at Soldier Field. Head coach Wilfried Nancy’s men emerged with a 2-0 win, their second clean sheet in as many games and their fourth straight win on the road.

With seven games to go in the MLS regular season, everything seems to be going perfectly for the Montreal side.

“Since the start of the year, since the very first day, the objective was to go as far as possible,” said head coach Wilfried Nancy. “The objective remains the same. We’re close to qualifying for the playoffs. As soon as that’s done, our goal will remain the same: to go as far as possible. We’re excite to book our spot in postseason tournament early, and after that the idea is to be ourselves and acknowledge that we have no limit.”

The Bleu-blanc-noir is now unbeaten in eight consecutive games, tying a Club record that was set earlier this year. They continue to occupy second in the Eastern Conference standings and have managed to create space with the teams close behind them; NYCFC suffered a 2-1 loss on Sunday, keeping them four points behind Montreal in the standings.

Their upcoming opponent, the New York Red Bulls, are not so far behind. Currently in fourth, New York sits five points behind Montreal in the standings, although they’ve played an extra game. If the Red Bulls hope to keep up with Montreal, a win on the road this Wednesday would be vital.

Things have been going well for head coach Gerhard Struber’s men as of late; the Red Bulls are unbeaten in three consecutive games, including a 3-1 win against Inter Miami last Saturday.

Montreal, on their end, will have an opportunity to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games and set a Club record for the second time this year. The team has been scoring an abundance of goals as of late, led by Honduran striker Romell Quioto, who was 12 goals in his last 11 starts.

Quioto has now scored 15 goals this season, just five behind the record set by striker Marco Di Vaio in 2013.

“It’s very normal for there to be excitement, but we don’t let it get to our head,” added Nancy. “We know where we came from to be here. When things go well, I often tell the guys to enjoy it, and when they go less well, it’s not the end of the world. We’re in a good phase right now, and I feel a good energy within the group. We continue pushing. We’re trying to maintain it even if it isn’t east, and we’ll see where it takes us.”

CF Montréal will be back on the road to take on its rival, Toronto FC, this Sunday at 7:30pm, at BMO Field, before returning to Stade Saputo for a two-game homestand, starting with a matchup against the Columbus Crew on Friday, September 9, at 7:30pm, followed by the Chicago Fire on Tuesday, September 13, also at 7:30pm. Tickets for both those games are available here.
