On Saturday, the Montreal Impact got away from the things that made the team successful early on in the season, and it cost them.
For the first time in 2013, the Impact conceded the opening goal in a game. It was the first time that the team allowed a goal in the first half, but because it happened really early on in the game, the team had a pretty high mountain to climb to try and play from behind - also a first this season.
“Conceding not even five minutes in, in an already tough place to play makes it even tougher on you,” said midfielder Davy Arnaud. “It gives them extra confidence. They’re a very good team, especially at home. It gets the crowd into it even more and from that point it’s difficult on us.”
With the early marker, SKC was able to dictate the game, which forced the Impact to play on its heels for 85 minutes, having to try and push forward to score, but always worried about conceding another and digging a deeper hole.
“They’re tough and when a team presses like that for 90 minutes and are organized, that can be tough to break down,” said the captain.
“We weren’t able to create a lot of chances,” added defender Karl W. Ouimette. “They put a lot of pressure on us. Kansas City controlled the game and was constantly attacking. We need to control the ball better and take our chances on the counter attacks. We will work hard on these details to prepare for our next game.”
