Montreal Impact sporting director Nick De Santis spoke to the media in a conference call Tuesday afternoon, responding to media inquiries about the team’s latest signing: Hernán Bernardello.
How did you learn about this player?
I went to see about 12 games in Argentina, first division games and reserve games. I caught one of the final matches of the season, between River Plate and Colon and that’s where I first noticed Bernardello. I inquired about him and I was told that he’d be a difficult player to acquire. Then, a little over a week ago, I got a call to see if we were still interested. He had offers from some Mexican and Argentinean sides as well that he was looking over. In the end, we were able to get a deal done.
What type of player is he?
He plays a central role in midfield, more defensive than offensive. He is a ball winner and helps the back line extremely well. He’s got good skills on the ball and good ideas, very simple but efficient. He brings an element that will not just help us today, but in the future.
Are there other transfers in the works?
We spoke the other day that we would always keep looking at possibilities. We talked about the defensive position after Nelson’s situation becoming complicated. So we have not stopped looking at that position, but we are not guaranteeing that we will sign someone either.
