With the CONCACAF Champions League and MLS playoffs on the horizon, the Montreal Impact is currently in discussions with Argentinean midfielder Hernán Bernardello, who could become the Impact’s second Designated Player. Negotiations are at an advanced stage, but no deal has been signed and approved by MLS.
Bernardello will be in Montreal to meet with team officials and to take his physical test.
Hernán Bernardello, who will turn 27-years-old on August 3, made his professional debut in 2006 with Newell’s Old Boys, where he played his first three seasons and over 80 games in Argentina’s first division. On July 20, 2009, he signed a deal with UD Almeria, following a transfer fee of 3 million Euros, going on to play over 100 games in Spain's first and second divisions.
He was subsequently loaned out to Atletico Colon, where he scored one goal in 25 games, playing one game in the Argentina Cup and one South American Cup matchup. At the international level, he played one game with the Argentinean national team in 2009.
Impact president Joey Saputo and sporting director Nick De Santis mentioned at last Wednesday’s press conference that they were seriously studying the possibility of adding one or two key players to the roster.
